Physiological, biochemical and genetic bases of amaranth (Amaranthus L.) breeding for food and feed purposes (a review)

چکیده

The review gives an insight into amaranth, a very promising crop for the whole world. This has long history dating back to days of Aztecs and Incas, whom it was one most important crops, along with corn. However, unlike latter, amaranth lost its nutritional value after being introduced Europe. Only in 20th century, largely thanks Nikolai Vavilov, attracted great interest as food feed crop. Amaranth is plant unique properties. It characterized by high content protein saturated essential amino acids, especially lysine, large number bioactive compounds, such vitamin C, amaranthine, rutin, carotenoids, etc. Of particular grain oil various lipid compounds: squalene, E, phytosterols, fatty acids. These compounds have properties from point view functional nutrition: natural antioxidants they bind free radicals, normalize metabolism, help decrease blood cholesterol levels. focuses on genes that determine main, valuable biochemical components: lysine. genetic pathways control biosynthesis these components been studied detail model objects. presence complete genomic sequence Amaranthus hypochondriacus L. makes possible identify orthologs key biosynthetic genes. At moment, only few identified, including squalene synthase (SQS) gene, VTC2 ascorbic acid synthesis lysine – AK DHDPS. article discusses prospects trends marker-assisted selection this well difficulties systematization genotyping, which be overcome successfully solve breeding problems.

Genetic studies for biochemical and quantitative characters in grain amaranth (Amaranthus hypochondriacus L.)

Twenty six accessions of grain Amaranth (Amaranthus hypochondriacus L.) were evaluated for salient biochemical and quantitative traits particularly reference to chlorophyll a and b, total chlorophyll, phenol content, leaf moisture, leaf protein content, test weight and yield plant. Genetic divergence and association among these traits were analysed. Chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophy...

Assessment of Antioxidant Activity, Grain and Oil Production of Amaranth (Amaranthus retroflexus L.) in Saline Conditions

Salt stress is one of the major factors limiting crop productivity worldwide. Grain amaranth is new crop with high yield potential and good nutrition value which can be a good substitute for salt-sensitive crops in saline areas. This research was conducted to evaluate different level of salinity and applied salinity stress at several growth stages on some morphological and physiological traits ...

Physiological and Molecular Analysis of Aluminium-Induced Organic Acid Anion Secretion from Grain Amaranth (Amaranthus hypochondriacus L.) Roots

Grain amaranth (Amaranthus hypochondriacus L.) is abundant in oxalate and can secrete oxalate under aluminium (Al) stress. However, the features of Al-induced secretion of organic acid anions (OA) and potential genes responsible for OA secretion are poorly understood. Here, Al-induced OA secretion in grain amaranth roots was characterized by ion charomatography and enzymology methods, and suppr...
